Healthy teeth and gums are more than just a pretty smile. They play a surprising role in your overall well-being. Brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups aren’t just good habits for a bright smile, they’re essential for your overall health. In this blog, we’ll be taking a closer look at this connection, specifically how oral health can impact your heart health.

Oral Health and Heart Disease

Taking care of your heart means taking care of your whole body, including—your teeth. Poor oral health can impact your heart health for several reasons.  Poor oral health increases the risk for a bacterial infection, which although it begins in the mouth, can spread bacteria through the bloodstream, affecting the heart valves. In fact, research demonstrates that gum disease is a factor associated with increased risk of heart disease.

Dental Care to Support Gum & Heart Health

The best way to support healthy gums and protect against gum disease is to practice proper dental care and oral hygiene. Be sure to brush your teeth thoroughly at least two times a day, for a solid two minutes each time. After brushing, remember to floss, as flossing can reach deep-set plaque that normal brushing cannot. Next, keep on top of your regular dentist visits, choose a healthy, reduced-sugar diet, and last but not least, avoid tobacco use, as the nicotine in tobacco products can damage your gums and increase the risk of developing gum disease.

So, the next time you’re considering your overall heart health, don’t forget to think about your smile, too. Staying on top of your dental hygiene and tooth health can help protect against gum disease and promote heart health.
